The Story of The Bridge Apartments
Where heritage meets modern comfort.

Tucked away on the banks of the River Ouse in the heart of York, The Bridge Apartments offer more than just a place to stay, they're a celebration of the city's rich history and timeless architecture.

Located at 1 Bridge Street, this elegant Grade II listed building dates back to between 1815 and 1820. The property has been thoughtfully transformed into stylish, modern apartments. Yet, its original character remains beautifully intact.

The building's striking pink and white mottled brickwork, laid in traditional Flemish bond with orange brick dressings, stands as a proud reminder of its Georgian heritage. Restored in 1990, and now reimagined once again, The Bridge Apartments breathe new life into this iconic corner of York.

But the story of this location stretches back even further—right to the heart of York's ancient river crossings.

The Ouse Bridge

The site near Bridge Street has long been a vital point of passage across the River Ouse. The original Roman bridge was eventually succeeded by a wooden bridge built further downstream by the Vikings. In 1154, that bridge tragically collapsed under the weight of a crowd gathered to welcome the returning St William of York from exile.

Later in the 12th century, a more durable stone bridge was constructed. Over time, this bridge became a central hub of city life. In 1367, it even housed what is believed to be Yorkshire's and possibly England's, first public toilets. The bridge also featured a chapel, a gaol, homes, and bustling shops, creating a small community above the river.

Floods in the winter of 1564-65 swept away part of the bridge, leading to repairs that included a remarkable new central arch spanning 81 feet, hailed at the time as one of the greatest in England, with some even comparing it to the Rialto in Venice.

By the late 18th century, the buildings on the bridge were gradually dismantled, and between 1810 and 1818, the old bridge itself was taken down to make way for the New Ouse Bridge. Completed in 1821 and designed by Peter Atkinson the younger, this elegant structure continues to carry people across the river and right past The Bridge Apartments today.

With their perfect blend of historic charm and contemporary design, The Bridge Apartments not only overlook the River Ouse, they overlook centuries of remarkable history.
